pearl jam text - 2002

cane: this is it, this is so huge.

cabbie: yes

cane: this is so huge, it pissed off howard stern. ha ha ha

cabbie: "yeah, when you piss off howard stern, you're doing okay."

cane: ladies and gentleman... pearl jam... is in the building.

cane and cabbie: yeaaah, ahhh, *clap* *clap* *clap* *clap*

cane: now, welcome, first of all, this is a huge, ah, beyond hugh thrill, biggest, probably, star, besides david lee roth, that i've had the privilege of interviewing.

cabbie: ha ha ha ha

cane: now, is this first time you've been together for what... 10, 12 years?

stone: what kind of reverb is that you've got on your voice there, you sound way hugher than all of us? i want that reverb on this mircophone.

cane: it's, you know, you know what that's for, you want it.

?: it's like radio reverb

stone: sexy... sound

cane: here bout that? now it's just normal.

stone: there ya go.

cane: see, now i'm not used to that.

cane: eddie, eddie you've got that too on your's.

ed: hey... ow...

*laughter*

cane: listen to that. now that's hugh, right there.

?: now that's a good voice.

cabby: you could do phone sex.

?: good voice

cane: he didn't even need the reverb though.

cabby: yeah, i know.

cane: so 10, 12 years, what makes you ah get all back together, now if it's true, or not true correct me. but the label said that it had been like that long since you all have sat down as a band and done an interview. true?

mike: true.

cane: at least on the radio.

mike: yeah, all in one room, it's good to be back, i don't know, we're just excited about a record.

*laughter*

mike: we're excited about it.

cabby: the record out november 12, anything special behind the name, riot act. i'm curious on that one.

*silence*

*laughter*

?: ta da ta da ta da ta da

ed: it's been 12 years, it takes a minute to warm up.

cane: it takes a minute to get.

*laughter*

cabbie: no, i understand completely.

*laughter*

ed: oh, next question. let's try another question.

cabbie: ok

cane: so, you know ah, there's nothing behind it then?

ed: well, i think, i think it represents the music in some way. and people probably figure that out when they hear it, but it's ah, ahhh, it would be hard to explain the music without you hearing it.

cane: right, but doesn't, it's not reflective of the kind of music on the record, because you know, the last few have been quite mellow.

ed: yeah, you know, it probably, hopefully, some of the lyrics, and even the you know, the rythums and melodies, its, they're built on, it probably is asking for some kind of open, honest debate about certain issues, you know, world issues that are going on.

cane: what are you thinking about and caring about right now, cause i know you are big into a lot of causes, and you've got a lot going on in your head the way it seems, you're a thinker, so what, what, what worries you right now.

ed: i think everybody just waking up reading the paper and going to bed watching the news is kind of curious to see, how you know, our, the current government, powers that be are representing us in the world. and it's kind of an intense time to say the least. and it's probably a good time to be active and educated on the issues so you can have a strong place to come from when you have an opinion, so really you're just kind of ask everybody to kind of educate themsleves maybe what's beyond just the normal media outlets.

cane: do you guys ever get in to these big heated political discussions, you know are your opinions kind of the same, all on the same page, are you guys just all over the place, one guy right wing, one guy left. cause that can be a bitch of a subject to talk about.

cane: hahaha ah, yeah

ed: we have friends that are right wingers, but they probably
wouldn't be allowed to be in the band.

stone: right

cane: we wouldn't either than.

cabbie: i'm kind of a right winger. i mean, i'm not necessary over the top right wing. but...

?: dude you don't look right wing.

*laughter*

cabbie: i don't do i.

*laughter*

cabbie: i, i, i, owe a gun and support the dealth penalty, so.

mike: owwww

stone: they would let you into those functions, all those big right wing functions.

cabbie: sure they do, oh, yeah, big fan of me.

cabbie: you said something interesting to me, eddie about learning from the media. and, i don't think the media has ever been a place to learn from, myself. i think we can learn much more than other than the media, i think the media, i work in the media mind you. but i think it tends to turn and twist things, into a certain way that someone would want you to believe or see and i think that people should be educating people instead of televisions or radios.

cane: two points for longest question ever.

*laughter*

ed: no, that's a good comment.

?: yeah.

ed: i agree, that's why it's you know it's nice to reach out to friends, and also kind of folks, we are fortunate enough to have friends like historian howard zinn or writers like noam chomsky where you can even ask them questions one on one besides just reading what they've written.

cabbie: right, i agree

cane: you guys got a tour that you are starting in the spring, is it?

jeff: february

cane: oh, february, okay so the words out. and ah, i think we've confirmed it today, you are opening for the who, on a date.

ed: new weekend in chicago, i think, monday. there is an ophanage there.

cane: that's pretty hugh, but you've played with them before though right?

ed: actually, in that same building again for that same cause which is a thing called maryville academy, it's an ophanage that they run in chicago. they take care of underprivileged and get them educated. it's really strong and it's something that pete was involved in. and you know, i'll follow him anywhere.

cabby: he's the man.

cane: how bout the record, when you were writing the record were you thinking at all about what's on the radio today, i mean were you thinking how are we gonna fit in, was that even a care or a thought?

jeff: nooo

cabby: ha ha

cane: you've just made a record, you wanted to make. basically, you've proven it whatever in the last 3 or 4 albums, you can make whatever you want to make and it's still gonna be purchased and it's still gonna get radio play, so, it was never a thought? not that i'm saying you'd wanna make a linkin park record, but.

?: come on rock rap.

jeff: i think we just tryed to you know pick the best songs, everybody brought in a whole bunch of songs, and ah we just decided to work on most of them. and you know through that process, it just because a band sound, a band identity. and, we feel really strong about it, we think it came out really good.

cabbie: where does this one stand in everything else that you've done, does, is there a thought that it's better or that it's. because you've been together so long does it just come more natural, now.

mike: it's the best. i don't know.

ed: i'd agree with that.

mike: it's the best. it's the most cohesive i felt in the studio. and, matt brought in a whole bunch of songs, jeff brought in a whole bunch, everyone contributed to it.

ed: it has the most guitar solos, and mike is...?

?: he's rippen on this record.

?: nice

mike: i'm excited about that too.

?: i am too.

cane: we have some people coming to the website with some questions, jergan of randolph, new jersey, since we are sort of on this mood of questions. he says that john lennon once said my role in society or any poets or artists is to express how we all feel, not as a teacher or preacher but as a reflection of us all. he wants to know if you guys agree with statement and, if you do, what have you guys reflected to us.

ed: why, i think it's more like you're just expressing yourself really, just from ah, i mean, i respect his statement there, but um, for one thing when you are writing or coming up with this stuff, it's easier to come from a personal basis, you know you don't feel like your speaking for anyone but yourself. it's you and a typewriter, and your dog's licking your leg, it's this very small, it comes from a small place, in a room in your house or basement or the studio, it's not, you're not even really thinking on any bigger level than just kind of where you're coming from and what your opinions are. again, kind of being informed or influenced by people that are smarter than you.

cane: right

cabbie: now, do you put peanut butter on your leg to get your dog to lick, because mine doesn't just come up and lick me unless i put something there.

? ewwww

cabby: no, between your toes. i, i'm sorry.

ed: i think he just naturally likes me. it's you know...

cabbie: nice, ha, ha.

cane: the album comes out november 12th. why don't we play the first single. cool

mike: alright

ed: it's your station

cabbie: hahaha, i wish it was our station

cane: yeah, right exactly. this is the first single, i am mine it's pearl jam on 92 krock.

..i am mine plays..

"oh, you know what it's like? ev
